UK Photography Rights
? The owners of private property normally do not have the right to prevent someone from taking photos of their property from a public place.
? Camera use is prohibited in many museums, concert venues and stately homes. If you enter a property where camera use is prohibited and start using your camera you are considered a trespasser under the law.
? Neither the property owner nor his employee has any right to confiscate or damage a photographer?s camera or other equipment.
? There is restriction on taking photographs in Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and Royal Parks in London. This applies to taking photos in connection with business, profession or employment. To take photos in these areas you need written permission from the Greater London Authority.
? Using a telephoto lens to take a photo of someone in a private place without their consent is probably an invasion of privacy even though the photo is taken from a public place.
? Taking a photograph of a UK bank note is an offence, unless permission has been given in writing by the relevant authority.
? Any person in a public place who appears to be taking photos in a covert manner can expect to be stopped by police especially with today's anti-terrorist climate
? The Official Secrets Act 1911 makes it an offence to take photographs of a ?prohibited Place?.
? All defence establishments.
